Bipolar Disorder Depression Defined

Bipolar depression is classified as a type of manic depressive illness and is considered as one of the most common mental illnesses effecting people worldwide.

The profound bouts of clinical depression that accompany this sort of clinical condition may include reckless behavior, increased libido or sex drive, grandiosity, irritability, severe thought disturbances, speech problems, and insomnia or lack of REM sleep.

Bipolar depression and manic depression have also been associated with schizophrenia and include a wide variety of mental disporders such a cyclothymia, Bipolar I, Bipolar II, and major clinical depression which are all characterized by a severe impairment dysfunction. These are punctuated by mania or hypomania which is a form of less-severe mania.

Is Bipolar Disorder Hereditary?

To a certain extent Bipolar disorder can be hereditary in nature. Studies have shown that family members often show a genetic disposition to develop a Bipolar condition over time to which they begin to manifest different symptoms. Because of the extreme nature of Bipolar Depression, it is estimated that the effects cost approximately $15.5 billion in productivity at the work place.

Some symptoms may include:

  1. -Mood swings that may cause the patient to feel irritable, overly happy or outgoing, or jumpy
  2. -Prone to distraction
  3. -Restlessness
  4. -Unrealistic belief in their abilities
  5. -Impulsive behavior such as sex and spending money
  6. -Feeling tired
  7. -Thoughts of suicide

It should be noted that according to the National Institute of Mental Health, that patients that suffer from bipolar depression may suffer from elevated thoughts of suicide and death, and if so should seek professional help immediately.
